Nine (9) years ago, our speaker and his wife seriously thought of leaving the Philippines and migrating to the U.S. or Canada. At that time, Philippines was very chaotic.. Around that time, many of their relatives and friends were also leaving the country for the so-called “greener pastures” abroad. One sister and two of his brothers, with their respective families, migrated to America and Canada. As such, our speaker and his wife were also tempted to leave the country.

I first met our guest speaker 15 years ago. We were both freshmen at the UP College of Law and I was then being invited to join the Alpha Phi Beta fraternity, which he had joined 3 years earlier. He was a little older than me and carried himself with a quiet dignity. I found out later that prior to taking his Political Science degree at UP, he had studied for 3 years at the PMA, where he was in the commandant’s list.

When we were underway, I asked to shake his hand and asked for his name, “My name is Alex,” he simply said. “I’m Max,” I replied, then fished in my pocket and offered him my card. He peered at it, then exclaimed: “Wow. It’s an honor! I read you every day!”

I once read a newspaper article written by the late Max Soliven, a prominent Filipino journalist. He wrote that his car had broken down during rush hour in a busy Makati intersection. He was late for an appointment in Malacañang, desperately trying to hail a cab, his SOS calls not getting through his office. A stranger, who was driving past, pulled over, offered to help, and went out of his way to give him a lift home.
