ROCK THE VOTE 2010
May 2009

6.4 million potential youth voters were not registered during the 2007 elections, and almost 1 million first time voters were not registered during the 2007 elections. Of that number, 75% did not know that they needed to register before voting and that registration could be done anytime. By 2010, the number of potential first time voters could climb to 5 million. These numbers are hard to ignore.

Alex Lacson, one of the “indie” movers of the Register and Vote campaign and author of the popular book “12 Little Things Every Filipino Can Do to Help Our Country,” said: “We have to convince the youth to keep the faith.” He recalled delivering a talk before high school and elementary students recently, and discovering that the majority of them, even at their very young age, could already say a mouthful in blaming the government for the country’s problems. But with 9 million unregistered voters for the 2010 elections, he said, the stakes are simply too high for Filipinos to remain cynical or indifferent.

He appealed to the youth who turned out in droves to watch the concert to launch the campaign: “Piliin natin yung may tunay na may puso sa mahihirap, tunay na nagmamahal sa ating pamilyang Pilipino, tunay na may malasakit sa mga kapuspalad at mga nangangailangan sa ating bayan.”
